BLUE HEAT ROLL PAST SOUNDERS

Santa Clarita downs Seattle 3-0 in front of home crowd

Santa Clarita, Calif. (June 3, 2011) – The Santa Clarita Blue Heat recorded their first shutout victory on Friday night as they defeated the Seattle Sounders 3-0 at home.

The Blue Heat fans were treated to some excellent performances by their hometown team, including two miraculous saves by Goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo and solid goals by three different Blue Heat players.

Playing as a forward, Portugese National Captain Edite Fernandes demonstrated her seasoned talent and leadership on the field throughout the game, heading in the first goal for the Blue Heat in the 29th minute. In the second half, forward Marky Boyce placed a perfect cross to midfielder Janet Mendez for the second strike. The third score was the result of a breakaway assist by Fernandes, laying off the ball to Hannah Beard for the goal.

“Seattle is a very strong team and we knew that that they would have momentum coming off of a win last Wednesday,” said Head Coach Fabian Sandoval. “Our players have an amazing work ethic, responding well to adjustments that were needed based on the Sounders style and level of play – the performance of our entire squad was excellent.”

Santa Clarita franchise owner Carlos Marroquin is extremely pleased with the success of the team thus far. “We have always said that we could count on a good foundation of local female talent, coupled with some amazing international and elite college players upon which to build a great team. The support of the Santa Clarita community at our games is important – with continued successes, the international visibility of professional level soccer in the Santa Clarita Valley will help to put us on the map,” said Marroquin.

The Blue Heat roster includes home-grown talent such as: Holly Hein (University of Michigan/West Ranch HS); Brielle Slepicoff (CSUN/Saugus HS); Katie Russ (CSUN/Canyon HS); Shasta Fisher (University of Virginia/Saugus HS); Kayla Kret (Fresno State/Hart HS); Rachel Gillis (CSUN/Saugus HS); Bethany Barker (College of the Canyons/Canyon HS) and Elvia Contreras (College of the Canyons/Canyon HS).
