BLUE HEAT UPSET WHITECAPS
Santa Clarita takes Western Conference top spot with 5-2 win
Santa Clarita, Calif. (June 5, 2011) – Knowing this would be the most difficult match of their young season, a very solid Santa Clarita Blue Heat squad took the Western Conference lead away from the Vancouver Whitecaps with a stunning 5-2 win at home. The Blue Heat win snapped the Whitecaps regular season undefeated streak of 15 games.
The 2010 W-League finalists were stunned by an Edite Fernandes goal in the 20th minute off of a Stacey Rodwell cross. Vancouver quickly struck back when Sydney Leroux sent a Caroline Patterson pass into the back of the net to tie the score.
Maintaining their composure, the Blue Heat served up three more unanswered goals by Liz Franco in minute 28, Fernandes in the 32nd minute and a penalty kick by Janet Mendez five minutes later. Before the half ended, the Whitecaps scored again on a penalty kick by Tiffany Weimer. Player of the Week Ann Marie Tangorra netted the final goal for the Blue Heat 15 minutes into the second half, holding Vancouver scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Blue Heat Goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo once again had a stellar performance with five saves over the course of the match.
“There is a maturity and game focus that seems to drive these talented athletes; which we believe is inspired by the leadership of such seasoned players as Edite Fernandes,” said General Manager Carlos Marroquin. “Words cannot express how proud we are of this team,” added Marroquin.
The Blue Heat record improves to 4-0-1 as they take to the road for games on Thursday, June 9 and Saturday, June 11 against the Colorado Rush and Colorado Force. The next home game for Santa Clarita is on June 28. For more information about the Santa Clarita Blue Heat, visit www.SCBlueHeat.com
