BLUE HEAT, RUSH BATTLE TO DRAW
Santa Clarita settles for 1-1 tie after late Colorado goal
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (June 30, 2011) – Hoping to notch another win to take over the Western Conference lead, the Santa Clarita Blue Heat had a difficult time with a tenacious Colorado Rush squad at Valencia High School on Thursday evening. At the final whistle, Santa Clarita remained undefeated, grateful for a hard-earned 1-1 score.
Throughout the game, Colorado’s quick passing and excellent technique were a challenge for the Blue Heat. At halftime, the score remained 0-0 with 13 shots between both teams. Making adjustments in the second half, Santa Clarita had several goal scoring opportunities, with unlucky shots hitting the crossbar. Finally, Blue Heat defender Kayla Kret netted a goal off of a Stacey Rodwell corner kick in the 82nd minute. The Rush never let up, and defensive miscues just four minutes later allowed forward Lindsey Horan to drive into the box unassisted and shoot a perfectly placed ball past a diving Cynthia Jacobo to even the score. The Blue Heat had two opportunities to pull ahead in stoppage time; however the win was out of reach.
The Blue Heat will be on the road to face the Victoria Highlanders on July 6, the Vancouver Whitecaps on July 8 and the Seattle Sounders on July 10 before returning to Santa Clarita for their final two home games at Canyon High School.
