BLUE HEAT OVERWHELM LA STRIKERS
Santa Clarita wins 7-2
May 29, 2011
Santa Clarita, Calif. – There was quite a bit of pent up energy for the Santa Clarita Blue Heat. Having battled to a scoreless tie on Thursday against Pali Blues, Santa Clarita was hungry to score, and score they did.
Taking the field with confidence, organization and playing a possession game, Hannah Beard posted an early goal, her second in three games. Edite Fernandes then used her experience and technique to put away her first goal for the Blue Heat. The first half ended, but not after a driving third score by forward Ann Marie Tangorra.
Early into the second half, substitute midfielder Stacy Rodwell scored two consecutive and perfectly placed goals off of outside free kicks to the upper corners, and just past the reach of LA Striker goalkeeper Erin Frushon. Late defensive line miscues by the Blue Heat led to two goals by Strikers forward Eva Dixon with 15 minutes left in the game. Markey Boyce and Liz Franco scored the final two goals for Santa Clarita before the final whistle was blown.
Santa Clarita goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo also had an outstanding game, stopping numerous shots and rebounds by the Strikers throughout the match.
Coach Sandoval and his staff are very pleased with today’s win and the team’s overall performance, noting that it is important to continue training hard for each upcoming opponent, given the depth of talent within the Western Conference.
The Blue Heat returns home on Friday, June 3 at Valencia High School, facing the Seattle Sounders at 7:00 pm.
